Neocatecumenal Way at St. Jude Parish: The Neocatecumenal Way is a world wide ministry of the Roman Catholic Church. At St. Jude we have 4 Neocatecumenal communities, I am part of the 2nd one. I was chosen to be part of the group responsible of leading our community. I was also chosen as lead guitar player and singer of our group. We also hold a meeting once a month for the youth of the Way of El Paso. Language is very important in our community because every year we go out and spread the word of the Lord to anyone we see and invite them to our Annual Catequesis. The Catequesis are meetings where the word of the Lord is spoken and given meaning for those who are interested in joining our ministry. These are mandatory inorder to join our group because it is necessary to understand how things work and understand why we do things. Each member of the Way gets together with their community once a week and all the communities of the parish get together on Saturday evenings for our Eucharist, which is the center of all of our beliefs. NMSU Student: The second community I have chosen is the NMSU community. I graduated from Santa Teresa High School in 2007 and began my college education at NMSU that same year. I am part of the College of Health and Social Services. I have enjoyed all of my classes during these 2 years except for one. Because I'm a Nursing major, I have had many challenging courses but I have succeeded in all of them. I was chosen for the Dean's List my first semester here. I am also a Crimson Scholar. Language is really important because that is how we are able to learn from our professors and from ourselves. NMSU is a great place to learn because we have great professors. I like the fact that everyone is allowed to dress how they like because it's a way to express yourself. It's not a spoken language, but it is infact a language of itself.
Nursing student at the School Of Nursing: Ever since my first day of school at NMSU I heard about how challenging it was going to be to get accepted into the School Of Nursing and how competative the major is. Being a student majoring in Nursing meant you were going to take hard pre-requisite classes like Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology. Through out these 2 years of pre-requisites I have tried my best to get good grades because I really wanted to be accepted. Time passed and it was time to apply. When looking at the applications of about 150 students, the only thing that matters is GPA. They only accept 48 students each semester. I applied with a 3.6 commulative GPA and was notified in May that I had been accepted into the program. I was very excited because Nursing is something I've always wanted to do. Language in the profession is very important because like they've told us, communication is the key to save a patients life.
These are great discourse communities you chose. Consider how specific language practices impacts these groups. For example, the church group has an interesting name (the Way) and uses lots of symbolism in things like the eucharist. Those are both commonplaces to that group - they have special meanings to them.
ReplyDeleteThe medical field is another great discourse community. There is so much jargon used by nurses and doctors and lab techs. Things like stat, code blue, clear, etc. all have a very different meaning for those in the medical field than for those outside of it. Do you think that language is used to invite others into the group or keep them out? Is it just for convenience?

ReplyDeleteCongratulations on being accepted to the nursing program! It is hard work and I have heard that only certain amount of students get accepted, so Congrats! I had never heard of the St. Jude Parish you mention. It sounds like a wonderful community.
Thank you Alicia!!
