The first ad ive been thinking about is "El Paso Outdoors". I love this advertisement about things to do in El Paso because it mixes both cultures here in El Paso: Hispanics and Anglos. I love how the commercial mixes both of them into this ad by adding spanish music in the background and english words spoken. In the pictures there is also a mix of hispanic and anglos. We're a city of diversity and unity and this add shows it all! The statement i might use for this ad is how it uses different colorful pictures of different events in El Paso to convince the audience (El Pasoans) to go out and explore the city.

The other ad is called "C. Ronaldo v.s Bugatti Veyron". This ad is for Nike Mercurial Vapor soccer cleats. What i like about this ad is the fact that they use Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the best soccer players in the world, to advertise these cleats. I also like the visuals they use. The ad is in black and white most of the time but everytime the cleats come out it turns to color. Then C. Ronaldo races the Bugatti Veyron sports car with the Nike Mercurial Vapor cleats on and wins. The statement I might use for this ad is how visual rhetoric is used to attract the audience and focus on the cleats rather than anything else. Also how the use of the very famous soccer player is used to attract the audience (soccer players) and encourage them to buy the cleats.

Let me know which one you think would have a better chance for the assignment.
Thanks!!!!

Hey Samantha-
ReplyDeleteFirst, do you prefer Sammy? Let me know.
I think you have chosen two great ads for your essay. I was really drawn to your explanation of the El Paso ad especially. I love how you are paying attention to the ways the ad blends cultural artifacts and images/music to reach two distinct groups (which actually make up one group in El Paso :)
You are already doing a really smart "reading" of the ad. I notice the visuals of the ad, too, when I watched it. What do you notice about hte people in the ad (multiple ages, ethnicities, genders, etc.)? There's a lot to conisder about how meaning is made in this ad and how it reaches out to viewers.
Then I watched the cleat commercial and I really loved it too. I noticed it felt like a movie - the way it was shot, the shifting colors. Why do you think they went back and forth between color and black and white footage? Why do you think the ad is so quiet? How is it supposed to make me feel as a viewer/ It's a really interesting ad with lots to consider, but the argument there is a little less obvious.
See what the rest of your group thinks.
Good work-
Jen
Hi Samantha,
ReplyDeleteI had not seen the El Paso commercial and to tell you the truth, I really didn't like this commercial for El Paso. It was nice, but they really didn't focus on things to do as a family. Maybe they were trying to appeal to the younger group, but being that I was born and raised in El Paso and still visit my family there, the advertisers forgot to show scenic drive, the Diablo stadium, historic downtown, and even Western Playland. The park is not very big but..I would think that an add for El Paso would be more convincing. So, I really loved your C. Ronaldo commercial. The colors they used to enhance his quickness. Of course, we all know that he would never beat the Bugatti (another great car!!) but the comparison was awesome. Not only would soccer players want to buy the cleats but people would know about the car. I really liked this one. Good Luck.
